Graduate Women International - Netherlands “GWI-NL”
GWI-NL wants to work together with you to improve the position of women and girls worldwide. GWI-NL focuses on education in the broadest sense of the word. Education is an effective tool because it promotes self-management and empowerment of women and girls, which helps them to become independent, self-confident and powerful in life and to respect themselves and each other.
GWI-NL is committed to advocacy and lobbying, organizes training programs, mentoring, workshops, seminars, lectures, networking events and educational projects, mostly through the international umbrella organization GWI, and participates in (online) discussions and webinars, also through GWI.
International and European context GWI-NL
GWI-NL is the Dutch member of the global umbrella Graduate Women International (GWI), which was founded in 1918 under the name International Federation of University Women (IFUW) and has consultative status at the United Nations (UN). Within the intergovernmental organization UN (1945) countries are working together in the field of international law, security, human rights, education and economy. GWI has lobbying teams in UN cities such as Vienna (peace and security), Paris (education), New York (socio-economic) and Geneva (human rights and labor).
At European level, the GWI-NL is a member of University Women Europe (UWE), who has participatory status with the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and is a member of the European Women's Lobby (EWL), which has consultative status with the European Commission.
In the Netherlands GWI-NL follows the Dutch Women's Council (NVR) and is committed to the 'Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women "and the CEDAW shadow report for The Netherlands. GWI-NL is also involved through civil society with the Dutch 'Commission on the Status of Women’ of the UN in the annual preparations for the Dutch government delegation.
